Living Room Basics

In spite of the fact whether you reside in an apartment or a cottage the living room in your house can create a lasting impression for all who enter. It can tell relatives and friends whether you are a laid back, fun loving or a formal person. The best room must reflect your personal taste and you must keep this in mind while going in for home improvement. You can arrange the living room in various ways. Though for some people the living room serves as a comfortable family place for doing homework, watching TV etc, for others this should be kept formal and perfect at all times. These factors must be borne in mind while changing the home décor.

In case of a drawing room or formal room, it most often displays the homeowner’s finest possessions. Symmetrical décor can be found having a sofa with painting above and a couple of end tables with lamps.

Traditional pattern of decorating also includes some chairs and tables and formal window treatments. Many modern bungalows and palatial houses have this kind of formal resting rooms which display the best items and richest exhibits. Mostly only few homes have such a perfect space for a common room these days which is more looked at than used.

The more casual living rooms have lighter window treatments and more cozy furniture. Smaller homes and apartments have this kind of common rooms or family rooms. It also has a less formal look. The decorative pattern also involves more color, fewer rules and softer lines. The casual living rooms follow fewer rules. Here, choices are made according to practicality. Less structure is followed in placement and selection of furniture items. There is a table for casual eating and seats are arranged around the TV.

The sitting room may also have a computer center with a desk.

In spite of whatever purpose your common room serves, you must choose fabrics, colors and furniture in the color and style you love. It can be natural, colorful, serene or lively but it should definitely reflect your taste. While going in for a change in your home décor, keep the aforesaid tips in mind while designing or renovating your common room. You can also have a basic plan of how you would like your family or sitting room to be and then develop ideas based on that framework.

Living Rooms and Decor

Living rooms are hardly used anymore now that great rooms, large family rooms, and casual dining have become the norm. But older homes and apartments still have major living rooms that can be made both beautiful and functional with some careful design.

When you choose your paint colors, go for something bright and cheerful. It makes the room appear both friendlier and larger. Area rugs can help to designate various functions, i.e. a game table, conversation grouping, or your entertainment center. But when you plan this, be careful not to obstruct your traffic patterns. Nobody wants to weave their way around furniture and plants while balancing a glass of milk and a plate of cookies!

Concentrate as much or more on your accessories than you furniture. Your personality can show up with less expense by using plants, wall hangings, lamps and curios that reflect your life experiences and tastes. No room is colder than one with no pictures, plants, and collections.

Your curtains or other window treatments and your area rugs will help to tie your color scheme together.

Accent colors can be brought in with your paintings and knickknacks.

When you have no family room, or basement rec room, it is important to be able to provide seating for guests when you throw a party. Ottomans and benches can double as additional seating.  Stack tables are also useful for placing beverages and dishes for that buffet style meal, you may have to serve to accommodate a larger than normal group.
